Why history is the most important lesson for lockdown (and how to teach it)

Time is precious;  These days we can find ourselves in a situation where we have too much or too little.  Creepy beginnings and gardening help fill the days for some, while others struggle to find an hour between work commitments to teach their children.  Time is precious, and the more we think about time and the way it turns into history, the more we can begin to find some fraction of the ratio.  Today, especially for children and young people whose world in their immediate surroundings and for digital reality has dwindled overnight, proportion is also a precious commodity.

  Human history helps give us a sense of scale.  This is why history education should continue during lockdown.  The great sweep of archaeological time from prehistory to the present day speaks of resilience and hope for us, often facing formidable challenges.  For children, for adults, history can provide both an escape and a valuable lesson in perspective, beyond our immediate situation.

  The past provides us with examples of experiences from which we can all identify: tumult and change, love and loss, triumph and joy.  From Stonehenge to Hadrian's Wall, English Heritage oversees some of England's most iconic sites - sadly many of them are still closed.  Their stories and their ability to transport and inspire us, however, and can be discovered online.  Through our history at Home Hub we want to invite people, people of all ages but especially children, to step into the past...
